Poems To Fall In Love With
chosen and illustrated by Chris Riddell
Macmillan Children’s Books

I’d already fallen in love with a good number of the poems Chris Riddell has included in this superb collection, but finding them here is still as much a joy as discovering the unfamiliar ones he’s chosen.

One of the latter in the first section Love and Friendship is Neil Gaiman’s Locks, inspired by the story of the Three Bears. It begins and ends, ‘We owe it to each other to tell stories.’ Powerful and very moving it was written by Gaiman for his then very young daughter.

Another new one to delight me was A.F.Harrold’s Postcards From The Hedgehog. The prickly writer is Simon and in his second card he writes this: ‘Dear Mum, / Lovely weather today. / I saw a really pretty girl. / Not sure how to approach her…

Harry Saves the OceanHarry Saves The Ocean: Teaching children about sea pollution and recycling. by N.G. K.

My rating 4 paws plus

Another A~MAZ~ING bright colourful rhyming read for children, featuring our favourite character Harry the Happy Mouse. We absolutely love this book series. However, this book is truly special bringing to light the problem of plastics in our oceans and along the coastlines. The opening lines simply entice you in as if swept along on a gentle sea breeze.

On the crest of a wave and the wisp of the wind,
Harry the Happy Mouse was packing his things.

The illustrations by Janelle Dimmett are as bright and beautiful as ever. Children of all ages are going to love this wonderful educational read.

Very Highly Recommended.

More Ketchup Please! Ruby's Tomato TaleMore Ketchup Please! Ruby’s Tomato Tale by Adam Bestwick

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Loved this book written in rhyme and full of fun illustrations. When Ruby was a baby Dad was half asleep one night when he went to get a bottle of milk to feed her. Sadly he gave her a bottle of tomato ketchup instead. Now Ruby has to have tomato ketchup on EVERYTHING!

‘She glugged ketchup on her boiled egg (and even in her soup)…
Ketchup on her ice cream too…
that poured out with a gloop!’

and when she runs out she screams “I want more ketchup please!”

Before we know it the corner shop runs out, then the supermarkets and even the whole world might be running out soon too.

Do you know womeone who loves ketchup as much as Ruby?

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutley LOVE this little book series based on true events.

Once again a bright and very beautiful children’s picture book. The stunning illustrations by Rebecca Sharp really bring the story to life. A book to share with the whole family. This is Book 2 so I would highly recommend getting Book 1 ‘A Home for Emy’ to read first.

A Home For Emy by Chris Turnbull

Both very Highly recommended

Seal Mother ~ A Selkie Tale in Verse

by Rose English Illustrated by Hannah Ryan

One lonely seal
in the midst of the ocean
rolls on the waves
to the rhythmical motion.
The seal watches over
the child on the sand.
Her lovely young daughter
born of the land.

On Midsummer’s Eve seals swim up onto the sand, shed their skin and transform into beautiful young women to give thanks to the mysterious Moon Goddess.

Lost in dance, no one notices a shimmering sealskin being stolen; leaving one beautiful Selkie trapped on the land forever.

Can an unlikely friend help her reclaim her skin, or is she destined to remain forever in human form?

‘Seal Mother’ – a magical Selkie tale of love, loss and deceit, told in verse.

“Seal Mother” by Rose English is a beautiful, poignant story told in rhyme. I love the fairy-tale feeling of the helpful mouse and the way a shell is used to communicate. Illustrations further bring this tale to life. The dance of the Selkies is one of my favorite pictures; it perfectly captures the moment.

Trapped on land, the Selkie has an overpowering need to reclaim her life in the sea, to be free, to be herself. The ending is powerful. This story spoke to me of our own need to be true to ourselves. “Seal Mother” would be an excellent read for all ages.

This story broke my heart in that way a good book has when it stays with you. To me it was almost an allegory for man’s interference with nature and the consequences were dire. It was a beautiful story told in verse. I loved it enough I’m going to order the actual book. The Kindle version is lovely, but the illustrations need to be appreciated also. I highly recommend this book to all ages.

Happy Reading
